THE PROCESS

TELLING YOUR STORY

You’re here because you might want us to help you write your story. Here are a few thoughts that might help you make a decision.

Maya Angelou said, “People will never forget how you made them feel.” So true. However, what if you could pass on more than feelings? What if you could share your cultural history and traditions? What if you could document and memorialize the stories and experiences that shaped your life? What if you could impart some important life-lesson? Or retell a few humorous events? What if you could document all of these experiences and pass them on to your children and grandchildren, and all the future generations to come? We can speak from our own personal experiences of regret. It’s hard enough to lose a loved one, but when you realize that the answers to some of the essential questions you have about your family’s history and cultural heritage are now gone as well, it’s a pretty tough nut to swallow. That’s why we encourage you to contact us, and let us collaborate with you to write your story and preserve your personal history.

YOUR BOOK WILL READ LIKE A NOVEL

When we finish your project, you’ll receive a book that even the most avid reader will enjoy. And it goes without saying that your family will love reading your book over and over.

We accomplish this by writing your book like we would a novel. First we’ll help you identify the story amidst of all your life experiences, the theme if you will. Is your story a rags to riches story? Is it about going against the grain and taking the road less traveled? Is it about a life-long dream accomplished? Maybe it’s about a cause you believe in? Once we identify the theme of your book, we’ll sift through the mundane and focus on the compelling. We’ll turn your humorous anecdotes into laugh-out-loud passages. We’ll show how your heartbreaking moments gave you new insights. We’ll pinpoint the most meaningful moments of your life, and craft a book that is witty, dramatic and emotional. And one that is very readable!

GETTING STARTED

We begin the process by having an initial conversation, either by phone or email. This will help us understand your ideas, the scope of your book and what your expectations are. We’ll also be able answer questions you might have, including the budget for your book. Once we agree to move forward, we’ll discuss the best way for us to learn about you. Face-to-face interviews are usually the easiest way to gather information. These conversations are recorded—with your permission of course—so as not to disrupt the flow of our conversation, and to allow us to take notes from the recording. We’re happy to travel to you, meet at a local establishment, or meet any place that makes you feel comfortable. (If you live in another part of the country, we can work out a way for you to send us recordings.) In addition, we encourage family members to weigh in and provide anecdotes and other information. We can interview family members at the same time, or we can conduct separate interviews with each member. We also welcome notes, documents, or any other pertinent information that might help us piece together your personal history.

If we’re writing your memoir, we’ll need to get beneath the surface. So we’ll be asking lots of questions. Not just the facts, but how you feel about the facts. Opinions and emotions are encouraged. Don’t hold back. The more information the better!

YOUR STORY, OUR WORDS

The task of sitting down to write a book can be daunting for most people. You need to organize your thoughts, decide on what information to include, structure your story, come up with your theme, target important points of conflict and resolution and then bring your story to a dramatic ending. That’s actually the easy part. The hard part is carving out time to write your book. By this point, most people throw in the towel.

That’s where we come in. We aren’t just good writers, we’re good listeners. Before we even write a word, we talk to you, find out about your life, who you are, what drives you, what excites you. We learn what’s motivated you to tell your story, and then we listen to your delivery and write your story.

Yes, these are our words, but our goal is to capture your essence, your personality and your style on the pages of your book. Whether we’re writing about an extraordinary chapter in your life, a meaningful relationship that taught you a special lesson, an obstacle you overcame, or a life-long dream you achieved, we go to great lengths to get each piece right. We treat each story with the utmost care, as if we were telling our own story.
